Natural lip balm is free of artificial coloring or scents and made with a few select ingredients, making it one of the best chapsticks you can purchase, but you have to pay up to get the best natural lip balms.

Or you could try making lip balm DIY style. It’s a pretty fun project, plus so simple and cost-effective, you’ll wonder why you didn’t try it sooner.

How to Make Lip Balm: 3 Basic Recipes

make lip balm

  • All in all, whipping up a batch of lip balm will take 10-15 minutes or less. You simply heat a mixed base until melted, add in essential oils or natural flavors, and then pour it into a lip balm container to cool and harden before use.
  • At the base of any lip balm recipe, you’ll find various waxes, butters, and oils. These provide moisturization and semi-solid structure, plus other benefits like healthy fatty acids, antioxidants, and mild sun protection.
  • Experiment with more oil for a simple lip gloss recipe hack (and consider adding mica if you’re going all-in). For a firmer, less oily balm, add a more generous portion of wax or butter. Waxes add firmness — well-suited to traditional upright tubes — while butters add creaminess.
  • You’ll also see vitamin E oil in some recipes, which boosts antioxidant power, promotes skin cell growth for healthy lips, and keeps the balm fresh over time. (A homemade batch should generally stay good for 3 to 6 months.)

1) Beeswax Lip Balm Recipe

What You’ll Need:

    • Lip Balm Container(s)
    • Beeswax Pellets, 2 tbsp
    • Shea Butter, 2 tbsp (substitute with mango butter, cocoa butter)
    • Coconut Oil, 2 tbsp (substitute with almond oil, jojoba oil, sunflower oil, etc. or add 1 tsp portions as desired)
    • Essential Oil(s) of choice, 5-15 drops as desired
  • Optional: Vitamin E Oil, ½ tsp

What You Do:

A note: Don’t forget to experiment with the proportions if you want something firmer, softer, or creamier — keep in mind the specific ingredients you use will also impact the texture a bit.

So, there are 3 options for heating your balm base:

  1. Add your beeswax, oils, and butter to a microwave-safe container. Heat in 30-second increments until melted, stirring between intervals. The mixture should be thoroughly blended when it is fully melted. Continue stirring.
  2. Add your beeswax, oils, and butter to a saucepan and melt together over medium heat, stirring until beeswax is fully liquefied. Remove from heat; continue stirring while it cools slightly.
  3. Use a makeshift double boiler set up to melt your beeswax, oils, and butter. Stir well to combine and once fully melted, remove from heat.

When the mixture is still warm but not so hot, stir in the essential oils (optional: Vitamin E). Then pour into your lip balm containers and cool at room temperature until solid, usually about an hour (for warmer climates, you can cool in the fridge, about 30 minutes).

Store extra tubes or tins in the fridge to preserve them longer, or keep the batch refrigerated in a microwave-safe container and reheat when you want to portion it out.

2) Vegan-Friendly Lip Balm Recipe

What You’ll Need:

    • Lip Balm Container(s)
    • Candelilla Wax, 1 ½ tbsp (approx. 4 grams)
    • Coconut Oil, 2 tbsp (substitute with almond oil, hemp seed oil)
    • Shea Butter, 1 tbsp (substitute with mango butter, cocoa butter)
    • Carrot Seed Oil, 15 drops (substitute with camellia oil)
  • Optional: Essential Oils of choice, 10 drops and Vitamin E Oil, ½ tsp

What You Do:

Follow the same steps as the beeswax lip balm! Add in the carrot seed or camellia oil during the second step; at the same time, you would add essential oils or Vitamin E.

Some notes: Candelilla wax has a slightly higher melting point than beeswax. So, if you’re familiar with using a beeswax recipe, the Candelilla may take a little longer to melt fully.

This balm will take longer to cool and harden. Give it at least 2 hours at room temperature, or 1 hour if refrigerated.

3) Natural Tinted Lip Balm Recipe

What You’ll Need:

  • Lip Balm Container(s)
  • White Beeswax Pellets, 2 tbsp OR Candelilla Wax, 1 ½ tbsp
  • Shea Butter, 2 ½ tbsp (substitute with mango butter, cocoa butter)
  • Coconut Oil, 2 tbsp (substitute with a base oil of choice or add 1 tsp portions as desired)
  • Castor Oil, 1 tsp
  • Natural Lip Stain of choice, 1 tsp or more as desired for color: Alkanet Root Powder, Raspberry Powder, Beet Root Powder, Hibiscus Powder
  • Vitamin E Oil, ½ tsp
  • Essential Oils of choice, 10-15 drops

What You Do:

Follow the steps above. Add the coloring powder during step 1 but not right at the beginning. You want the mixture warm yet not fully melted and blended. Ideally, we’re trying to incorporate the tint with the rest of the base, not add it afterward, but you can mix it in right after removing it from the heat if necessary.

Other than that, continue as described above, depending on which base you made.

Benefits of Homemade Lip Balm

Cheap and Plentiful

Although your ingredients will cost more than one or two packs of lip balm, you definitely won’t finish them after just one batch of balm. The average homemade lip balm recipe will create a tiny batch, enough for one tin, or a few tubes or small round containers.

Per tube/container, it’ll actually be cheaper, and you’ll be able to make the recipe many times over before using up all your ingredients.

Specially Tailored Just for You

The best part of all this may be creating unique scents or flavors, adding pops of color or tint, and playing with recipe portions to get a shinier look and more liquid consistency. Natural homemade lip gloss might be more in demand than the lip balms!

You can accommodate honey-related allergies or vegan lifestyles with a DIY lip balm without beeswax on the serious side. For oil or flavoring sensitivities, you can easily work around them when you make your own all-natural lip balm instead of relying on store-bought blends.

They’re Worth Sharing

Some homemade lip balm could be a cute addition to a care package or a nice little gift to let someone know you’re thinking of them. You could even share your lip balm as party favors or sell them at a market.

Takeaway

Hopefully, you’ll be able to save (or make?) a few bucks and have a little DIY fun now that you know how to make chapstick at home.

If nothing else, you’ll be able to tell which store-bought natural lip balm is transparent when they claim they’re simple, clean, and natural because you’ll know what goes into some of the simplest natural blends.
